Top 10 Dog Names

Wondering what to name that new puppy? Look no further. We have found lot’s of help for you!

The Importance of a Name   With dogs being treated more and more like members of the family, giving dog’s human sounding names have become more and more popular. Spot and Rover just doesn’t seem appropriate anymore!

Here are some important points to keep in mind when naming your dog.

  • Keep it simple. Dogs grasp brief orders, so short and sweet says it best. Names with just a couple of syllables work well.
  • Don’t confuse the issue. Your puppy’s name shouldn’t sound similar to any commands.
  • Publicity hound. Since you’ll be calling your dog’s name in public, loudly and frequently, make sure it’s not a name you’ll be mortified to yell.
  • Consider the kids. You’re right; “Fluffy” doesn’t illustrate the noble nature of your Champion Irish Wolfhound, but kids appreciate simplicity, too.
  • Don’t name the pooch after a family member. Ask first before bestowing such an “honor” on a friend or relative.
  • Old dog, new home? Most experts suggest that you stick with the name your adopted dog already owns. I heartily disagree with this advice. Many rescued dogs have come from abusive or stressful situations. I like to let the dog know from the first day that EVERYTHING will be different here. A new name goes with the new start.
  • Try it out. When you find a name you like, give it a test run for a day or two. If it feels natural, it’s a keeper! Otherwise, move on to the next name on your list.
